Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)

Do you think you may have a pelvic organ prolapse?  A women’s health physiotherapy consultation may be able to help you.

Stretched or damaged deep pelvic connective tissue or fascia and weak pelvic floor muscles can cause dropping of pelvic organs – bladder, uterus or rectum.  This can be felt as a bulge in the vagina with an achy sensation in your pelvis or lower back. The most common cause is childbirth but symptoms may not appear until after menopause when some of the pelvic floor muscles weaken.

The good news is that this condition can be managed, and often significantly improved with physiotherapy. This may include Pelvic Floor Strengthening exercises and advice regarding general exercise and lifestyle factors. Medical devices such as pessaries can be helpful and whether a surgical consultation is necessary can be discussed with your Physiotherapist.
